Chief Investment Officer and Chief Executive

Guy is the CEO and founder of Flying Colours. He launched the business in early 2016 determined to offer consumers a better value way to access financial advice and investment management. As well as leading the business, Guy acts as Chief Investment Officer, with responsibility for the research and design of our investment portfolios.

In 2000, Guy co-founded Octopus Investments, growing the company from start-up to market leader with over 6bn of assets under management for more than 50,000 customers.

Prior to that, Guy worked as a fund manager for Mercury Asset Management where he was responsible for over $1 Billion in US Equities.

Pete Wilson

Managing Director

Peter joins FC with an outstanding track record across FTSE top 20, US Blue Chip, Central Government and SMEs. A career built upon developing and delivering sustainable business growth strategies focused on measurable results and outcomes. Peter’s experience and skill set is a perfect fit to help deliver our business plan. He has driven significant growth across his previous portfolio, for example: a 38% growth following a flat line resulting in the early sale of Kettle Foods ltd to Lion Capital, achieved a doubling of growth on £150m portfolio at GlaxoSmithKline with a 20% investment and established a £35m turnover from start to three years for a data led communications response unit for the current Prime Minister and now adopted by US, EU and Australia. Peter has worked within Financial Services, at board level advising high street banks, FCA on consumer segmentation and HMRC on large scale transformation.

James Shenton

Investment Director

James has worked in financial services for over 20 years, starting in equity research and investment management before joining Guy at Octopus Investments and helping to grow the business from start-up to over 500 staff and £6bn of assets under management. At Flying Colours, James is responsible for ensuring the smooth running of the business and for delivering on our growth strategy. He is passionate about the use of new and emerging technologies, which will ultimately allow Flying Colours to offer the best products and service to its customers.

Jonathan Dominey

Chief Operating Officer

Jonathan is a fully qualified financial adviser with more than 7 years’ experience in financial services. He specialises in cashflow planning and is responsible for developing our advice software.

David Burns

National Advisory Services Manager & Chartered Financial Adviser

David has worked in the financial services industry for over 35 years. He has worked for high street Banks, Insurance companies and IFA companies. David is a ‘Chartered Financial Planner’ and a Fellow of the ‘Chartered Insurance Institute’. He has been on the exam-writing team of the ‘Chartered Insurance Institute’ for over 10 years. David has provided financial planning advice to ‘ultra’ high net-worth and high profile personal clients. He has also provided financial planning advice to large corporate clients. David continues to manage adviser teams to success.

Investment committee Our investment portfolios are monitored by our experienced investment committee. This is chaired by Guy Myles and also includes Mark Preskett and James Shenton.

Mark Preskett

Portfolio Adviser

Mark Preskett, CFA, acts as investment adviser to the Flying Colours portfolios. He sits on the Flying Colours Investment Committee, providing guidance on fund selection, asset allocation and portfolio construction. He is also a Portfolio Manager for Morningstar Investment Management in London, managing multi-asset portfolios for a range of financial institutions in the UK and Europe. Prior to joining Morningstar in 2011, he worked as an investment analyst for AIG Life.  

James Shenton

James has worked in financial services for over 20 years, starting in equity research and investment management before joining Guy at Octopus Investments and helping to grow the business from start-up to over 500 staff and £6bn of assets under management. At Flying Colours, James is responsible for ensuring the smooth running of the business and for delivering on our growth strategy. He is passionate about the use of new and emerging technologies, which will ultimately allow Flying Colours to offer the best products and service to its customers.

John Varley

John is a fully qualified financial adviser with 30 years experience gained across all areas of financial planning. He is passionate about providing high quality great value independent advice. For over ten years he has particularly specialised in providing expert advice to elderly and vulnerable members of society, their families and legal representatives. During his career John has held various senior management positions with large household name financial institutions. Outside of work John lives in a picturesque village on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds and enjoys spending his spare time with family and friends.

John Drakes

John has over 28 years experience as a financial adviser, having held posts with some of the UKs largest & well respected financial institutions. He holds the Diploma in Financial Planning as well as a number of specialist qualifications linked to his work with elderly and vulnerable clients. John is a member of the Personal Finances Society, Chartered Insurance Institute and is most proud of being an accredited member of the Society of Later Life Advisers John  deals with higher net worth clients, clients facing the financial challenges of later life, trusts and wealth management as well as clients needing advice following financial settlements.

He has worked in the financial sector for over 27 years and has a wealth of experience across Pensions, Investments, Protection and Tax Planning. John specialises in helping clients with their retirement planning and investment needs but he also is able to provide comprehensive advice across all areas of financial planning. He takes great pride in maintaining long term relationships with clients and considers the on-going service just as important as the initial transaction. Outside of work he is married to Anne-marie and has two daughters and his beloved black Labrador, Bella. John’s main passion is cycling and he can often be seen riding around the Lincolnshire countryside with his friends.

Nigel Wvendth

Achieving clients’ financial aims and providing excellent customer service are at the core of Nigel’s approach.  He prides himself on building strong, long lasting, trusted relationships with clients, helping them turn their goals into reality.

Nick Tattersall

Nick is a fully qualified financial adviser with over 15 years experience in the finance and banking sectors and working towards Chartered Status. He is also the regional operations manager for Flying Colours Lincoln office providing support to the Head of Region and the wider team. Nick also leads the team of paraplanners and administrators who provide support to the financial advisers. Nick lives in the north of Lincolnshire with a young family and enjoys playing golf in his spare time. He can often be found walking a slightly bonkers cockapoo around the village!

Sarah Arora

Steve Stobie

He has nearly twenty years’ experience across Pensions, Investments, Protection, Mortgages and general insurance. Steve specialises in helping clients with retirement planning and savings and investment advice, but like all our advisers here, is able to provide comprehensive advice across all areas of financial planning. Outside of work, he is married to Jenni, and their three young children keep him busy. He is also an avid armchair supporter of Everton Football Club, but don’t let that cloud your judgement before speaking to him!

Mehar Sandhu

Mehar is a fully qualified level 4 adviser, with a Diploma in Financial Advice. He has amassed over 7 years of industry experience, having worked in both a larger city based practice and a smaller boutique advisory outside of the city. Mehar joined Flying Colours as a Partner within the firm, to head up the regional Milton Keynes office. His focus will continue to be assisting clients with retirement planning, accumulation of wealth through various tax efficient wrappers and protecting their family and assets. Mehar's client base ranges from private individuals and small to medium size enterprises - with a focus on helping them to become more tax efficient through sound financial planning advice.

Steve Lavelle

With over 30 years' experience in Financial Services, Steve holds the level 4 Diploma with the Chartered Insurance Institute as well as also being a member of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investments.

Steve has a wealth of experience gained from working for a number of large banking institutions mainly working within the Commercial and Corporate Departments offering advice to business owners.

In recent years Steve has specialised more helping clients at retirement utilising Pension Freedoms legislation introduced in 2015.

Outside of work Steve has 3 young children, enjoys cycling and hillwalking and can often be found working hard at his local gym.

Reece Jones

Reece is a fully qualified Financial Adviser and holds a Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning and a Certificate in Mortgage Advice. Reece did his degree in Business Studies and Financial Services and has had a passion for Financial Services ever since. He has spent about 14 months working abroad for Citi Group (NYC) in their Global Wealth Management division, and the last 8 years specialising in investments, pensions, tax-planning, mortgages, and protection advice for private individuals in the UK. Reece is a firm believer in building  long-term relationships that deliver the best results from financial planning decision. Outside of work, Reece likes to keep fit and enjoys challenging himself. He's completed a number of endurance events in the past - including the London to Brighton Bike Ride and the MK Half Marathon. Reece finds it really rewarding to see just how far you can push yourself if you put your mind to it, whilst helping raise awareness and funds for good causes, too.

I am married and have two young children. The children keep me very busy when away from work but I love every minute of it. Current TV is just Disney films on rotation! I enjoy a number of different sports but as the knees have started to give up football is now in the retired column with the gym and Golf taking over – when time allows.

With a background in pensions, protection, investments and taxation, Samantha uses her experience to deliver excellent customer service and assistance to clients and colleagues. In her free time, she enjoys outdoor activities and watching live motorsport.

Mathew Burrows

Mathew is a diploma qualified independent financial adviser with a wealth of experience gained over 25 years. His expertise includes advice on pensions, investment management, personal protection, business protection and inheritance tax planning (including the use of trusts). Over the years, Mathew has helped many clients from all walks of life achieve their financial objects in a clear and understandable way. Mathew is a guest financial speaker on BBC radio, he is also a keen road cyclist.

Ed believes his purpose as a Wealth Planner is to help my existing and future clients over four distinct phases of life: the creation of wealth, its maintenance, its growth, and its protection. Ed Cullen offers bespoke tailor-made packages, designed to smooth the way through the minefield that financial planning can be. His experience  has prompted this approach, and he believes in the merits of customised solutions; based on his knowledge of working for Banks in the past who only offer  one-fit, off-the-shelf solutions. Such products are specifically designed  for a mass market approach, which generally tends to benefit only the providers.

Carl Williams

With over 18 years in the Financial Services industry, Carl was also employed by Lloyds Banking Group for 17 years - with 8 years of this service within the Private Banking arm of Lloyds, providing an ongoing Relationship Service to a bank of over 300 clients. He then decided to move into Independent Advice as he felt that offering Restricted Advice, such as that which High Street Banks tend to offer, limits client options and therefore does not really adhere to the 'Treating Clients Fairly' mantra which is a significant factor in providing financial advice. Carl believes that  building relationships with clients and providing an ongoing service has helped him become a trusted adviser and has resulted in many clients happily referring their friends and family.

John Munton

John's specialist areas include investments and retirement planning, with a strong background in investment analysis and performance reporting. He is also able to provide advice across all areas of financial planning. Outside of work, John and wife, Sara, have just recently celebrated the birth of their first child, Noah. John's passions include football and golf, although he admits to being a bit of a fair weather golfer. After an around-the-world trip, John also loves to travel. This may have to be put on hold with the arrival of baby Noah.

He also tries to keep fit with the  occasional run and gym session, unfortunately, not very successfully at the moment but he's adamant he's still trying.

Stephen joined the industry working on investment specific stockbroking tasks before adding to his knowledge in this area by focusing on the bespoke financial planning side of the industry allowing him to deliver a truly rounded approach to financial services for his clients. Stephen takes enormous pride out of having a working relationship with his clients he has built up over the years delivering a jargon free service that his clients truly cherish. Outside of work he is married to Joanna and has two sons William and Sebastian and in his free time you will find Stephen with his sons at rugby and football training or down the gym where he has been a member for 20 years.

He regularly listens to podcasts and reads constantly, all in an effort to better understand how people think and work, which allows him to constantly improve as a financial planner.

Derrick Royall

Derrick is a Chartered Financial Planner with over 36 years of experience in Financial Services, of which more than 22 years have been as an Independent Financial Adviser. Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree with honours, Chartered Financial Planner is a widely accepted 'gold standard' qualification for professional financial advisers in the United Kingdom. Derrick works closely with his clients to provide a highly personalised service, covering all aspects of financial planning and wealth management. He has strong technical and analytical skills and is passionate about proactively helping his clients progress to achieve both their personal and financial goals. Derrick provides consultancy support to manage the South West Region for Flying Colours as well as servicing a growing number of High Net Worth clients. Outside of business, Derrick enjoys spending time with his wife and takes a keen interest in the progress of his two sons who are studying at University and Drama School. He also enjoys travel and keeping fit to age as successfully as possible. This involves cycling, walking, keep fit and yoga. He is an active member of the Bristol Breakfast Rotary Club, supporting local and international good causes and is currently Chair of their International Committee.

Defined Benefit schemes has been a large focus of Matt’s career over the last few years helping trustees and companies reduce the liabilities of there Final Salary schemes, via such means as Flexible Retirement Options, Pension Increase Exchange and At Retirement Services. Outside of work he is married to Lucy and has a daughter, Sophie. Matt’s main passion is football with many a weekend watching Arsenal FC. He has taken up golf recently and can be seen calling four quite often at Sand Martins Golf Club in Wokingham.

Outside of work, Aoife enjoys spending time with family and friends and regular trips home to Ireland.

Peter is a Senior Administrator and holds the CII Certificate in Financial Planning. He has worked in the Financial Services Client Support and Administration for over 9 years. Peter also has a wide experience of administration in other sectors including Retail, Information Technology and Training. Peter enjoys working as part of a team and assisting clients and colleagues alike. In his spare time Peter enjoys music, art and the theatre, he loves a walk in the countryside and is a volunteer dog walker for the local rescue home.

Stephen believes a smooth, friction-free client journey is one of the most important factors when it comes to financial advice and is proud that Flying Colours aspires to deliver this every time. In his spare time, Stephen enjoys watching sports - especially football and is a season ticket holder at QPR.  Also, he has been asked to be a ‘Best Man’ 5 times, so if you need help with any speeches – He is your man!

Outside of work, Melanie enjoys spending time with her family and friends.

Andrew Lynch

Andrew is a new aspirant to the financial services industry. He recently completed his CeMAP, is currently in the process of completing a Law Degree with Open University and working towards completing his Diploma in Financial Planning as well. Despite his love for books, Andrew has been a lifelong musician. He spent his youth touring the world with various jazz bands, choirs and orchestras, playing at such venues as The Royal Albert Hall, Notre Dame and Piazza San Marco. Nowadays, he’s happy to just take an hour out the day to sit down with his guitar and write some songs.
